Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) promises to deliver transformational innovation and efficiency across a range of clinical, operational, and technical processes within health care. To achieve these benefits, provider organizations will be challenged to more fully embrace new digital technologies and invest resources in the advanced data management capabilities, updated IT infrastructure, and internal expertise that will be necessary. These are among the findings of a July 2024 survey of the NEJM Catalyst Insights Council. There is broad consensus among survey respondents that GenAI will have a big impact on health care delivery over the next few years. Yet few health care organizations are ready for adoption today.
